Can I get your number?

A recent email read...
"UNBELIEVABLE MATH PROBLEM

HERE IS A MATH TRICK SO UNBELIEVABLE THAT IT WILL STUMP YOU. PERSONALLY I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHO CAME UP WITH THIS AND WHY THAT PERSON IS NOT RUNNING THE COUNTRY.

1. GRAB A CALCULATOR---NOT AN ADDING MACHINE. (YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO DO THIS ONE IN YOUR HEAD)

2. KEY IN THE FIRST THREE DIGITS OF YOUR PHONE NUMBER (NOT THE AREA CODE)

3. MULTIPLY BY 80

. MULTIPLY BY 250

. ADD THE LAST 4 DIGITS OF YOUR PHONE NUMBER

. ADD THE LAST 4 DIGITS OF YOUR PHONE NUMBER AGAIN.

Pretty cool, right?

Now for the personal invitation... Take your mind back to your beginning algebra/pre-algebra days... Recall the Order of Operations and a few properties... According to this email, if you can break this "magic" math trick then you're being asked "why you're not running this country".

  1. Here's how it works: It's essentially multiplying the first three digits by 10000 then adding the last 4 digits. It just adds a few simple twists to make you lose track of what's going on. If you didn't add 1 in step 4, you could delete step 8 (this step is put in so you don't see 4 zeros where the last 4 digits will go). If you removed step 4 and 8, then you could combine steps 3 and 5. You can also remove steps 7 and 9 if you simply multiplied by 10000 instead of 20000 in steps 3 and 5.
